How to Allow Camera Access on Edge for Random Video Chat

Fix a blocked camera in Microsoft Edge for cam chat: site permissions, the Windows privacy switches and the apps that quietly hold on to your webcam.

Microsoft Edge puts two gates between your webcam and a website: the browser’s own site permission and the Windows privacy settings. If either one is closed, your random video chat shows a black square. Here is how to open both.

Site Permissions Inside Edge

The first time you start a video chat, Edge shows a prompt near the address bar asking to use your camera and microphone. Choose Allow. If you blocked it once, Edge remembers and stops asking, so the fix is manual.

Click the lock icon on the left of the address bar, then open Permissions for this site. Set Camera and Microphone to Allow and reload the page. That is usually all a cam chat needs.

For a wider view, type edge://settings/content/camera into the address bar. This page lists every site you have allowed or blocked. Remove randomchat.io from the Block list if it appears there.

The same page has a dropdown for your default camera. It matters if you own a laptop camera and an external webcam, because Edge may be trying the wrong device. Pick the one you want, then reload.

Microphone problems follow the same path at edge://settings/content/microphone. A partner who can see you but not hear you in a random video call usually points to a blocked or wrong microphone, not a broken one.

Windows Privacy Switches and Busy Cameras

Windows 10 and 11 have their own camera privacy settings, and Edge counts as a desktop app. Open Settings, then Privacy & security, then Camera, and check three switches:

If any of these is off, Edge cannot reach the webcam, whatever its own settings say.

Next, look for a busy camera. On Windows, one program often keeps the webcam for itself. Close Teams, Zoom, the Camera app or anything else that might use it, and check the system tray for apps running in the background. Some laptops also have a physical shutter or a function key with a camera symbol that turns the lens off.

After changes, restart Edge and open the page again. When your preview appears, sign in or choose Chat as guest, pick who you want to meet, and you are matched for a random webcam chat. Press Next at any time to start a fresh random chat with someone new.
