Safari asks before any website can use your camera, which is good for privacy but confusing when you tapped the wrong button. Here is how to grant access on Mac, iPhone and iPad so your random video chat works.
Allowing the Camera on a Mac
When you start a video chat, Safari shows a small prompt asking whether the site may use your camera and microphone. Click Allow and you are done. If you clicked Don’t Allow earlier, Safari remembers that choice, so you need to change it by hand.
With the site open, go to the Safari menu in the top bar and choose Settings for This Website (on some versions it shows the site name instead). A small panel drops down. Set Camera and Microphone to Allow, then reload the page.
You can also manage every site in one place. Open Safari, then Settings (called Preferences on older macOS), then the Websites tab. Pick Camera in the left column, find randomchat.io in the list and switch it to Allow. The default for other websites can stay on Ask.
If the prompt works but the preview stays black, another app may be holding the camera. Quit any call apps you are not using, watch for the green light next to the lens, and reload. A random webcam chat needs the camera free at the moment the page loads.
Still stuck? Restart Safari completely before your next random video call, since a fresh launch clears a surprising number of camera glitches.
Allowing the Camera on iPhone and iPad
On iOS and iPadOS the prompt looks similar: tap Allow when the site asks. If you denied it, there are a few places to fix it.
- In Safari, tap the page settings button in the address bar (shown as “aA” or a small menu icon), choose Website Settings and set Camera to Allow.
- In the Settings app, open Safari (listed under Apps on recent versions), scroll to Camera and choose Ask or Allow.
- If the camera seems missing everywhere, check Screen Time: under Content & Privacy Restrictions, Camera may be switched off in Allowed Apps.
After any change, close the tab and open the page again, because Safari sometimes keeps the old permission until a fresh load.
Phones and tablets use the front camera by default, which is what you want for a video chat. Good light in front of you will help the picture more than any setting.
Once your preview shows your face, sign in or choose Chat as guest, pick who you want to meet, and the random chat begins. For a video chat with strangers that looks its best, see our video chat tips. Other fixes are collected in the FAQ, and every cam chat problem there has a short answer.
